Ludhiana, August 25

Though the flood situation in Ludhiana district is completely under control, efforts to protect affected people and livestock from potential ailments are still continuing. Animals are being vaccinated in flood-affected villages. To date, more than 2,000 livestock have been vaccinated in these villages.

The Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry Department, Dr Ashok Kumar, said 13 animals had been dead in the district due to floods. Eleven of these animals were killed due to rising water in the Kum Kalan drain while two were killed in a roof collapse at Gill village during heavy rain. During this time, around 50 animals were suffering from various diseases. The department had vaccinated 5.80 lakh livestock of Ludhiana district before the monsoon but now after floods, more than 2,000 livestock of dozens of flood-affected areas have been given booster dose. In the villages where there was a lot of floodwater, a survey is being carried out. Animal testing camps are under way in the affected villages so that no disease spreads among the livestock.

Two trolleys, 200 sacks of feed and a truck of straw were also distributed to villages. Besides, 60 sacks of silage (achaar) have been sent to the flood-hit villages of Jalandhar district. The department was sending 150 more sacks of silage to the affected villages of Jalandhar and Kapurthala districts. Besides, 17 teams have been deployed in the flood-affected villages which will remain there till the alert is in force.
