To make farmers aware about their livestock and to provide them with the latest updates on maintenance of animals, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) has come up with about a dozen calendars. These calendars will useful for farmers to know everything about their livestock, including their reproduction cycle, how to get better milk, best quality of fodder, vaccination time and their maintenance.

Giving details about the calendar, Harish Verma, director of Extension Education, GADVASU, said the calendars were a result of the hard work of GADVASU’s faculty. The calendars provide an in-depth knowledge on everything about animals. “It took us for about three to four years to make these calendars. Starting from vaccination to reproduction process of animals, steps for getting good quality fodder, every information, required by farmers is provided in the calendars. To date, we have sold about 10,000 and each calendar costs about Rs 30,” said Verma.

For the convenience of farmers, thorough knowledge about cows, buffaloes, dogs, pigs and goats have been given in the calendars.

Tejinder Singh, a farmer from Fatehgarh Sahib, said his family had been in livestock farming since years but still depend on the information provided in the calendars. “I have started following the pattern given in calendars and it is bearing fruits. Since the quality of fodder has been improved, the production of milk has improved as well. The information on vaccination provides a complete knowledge to save animals from many seasonal diseases such as mastitis, brucellosis and de-worming pattern. These calendars are useful for those farmers who want to cultivate with the latest upgradation,” he said.

Another farmer Joginder Singh from near Mullanpur said the calendars provided information on calf-management also. “Their food, vaccination cycle, diseases and proper environment to be given, all information has been provided in the live-stock calendar. I have got them all and if anyone needs help, I provide them with scientific information,” he said.
