Three days after a joint team of Punjab Police and the Border Security Force (BSF) deployed on Sangrur bypoll duty at Kaliyan Bridge on Sirhind Canal rescued a drowning woman, a 70-year-old resident of Littran village was rescued by a BSF jawan on Monday.
A special naka of Punjab Police and the BSF was set up at Kaliyan Bridge under the supervision of SHO Sandaur Sanjiv Kapoor.
“While we were frisking passersby and checking vehicles, we noticed that an old man had fallen into Sirhind Canal. Acting promptly, Constable Sonvani Rahul of 177 Battalion of BSF jumped into the canal. He managed to rescue the drowning old man, identified as Mohammad Namazu of Littar village in Raikot subdivision,” said Sanjiv Kapoor.
Though apparently it looked a suicide attempt the police were yet to ascertain sequence of events leading to the incident. However, the victim, who had walked down from his village to the bridge, said he had slipped while washing his hands in canal water.
