Non-resident Indians (NRIs) connect in the Assembly elections this time have loosened their threads. NRIs are silent this time. Most of them are only waiting for the poll results, as compared to the previous years when they used to descend to their country for casting vote.
The ongoing pandemic and little excitement due to prominent leaders shifting parties led to disinterest among NRIs in the elections.
Amrik Singh whose most of the relatives live abroad and take keen interest in politics are dormant this time.
“During every elections, my uncle used to come to India due to his close association with a political party but this time, he did not come. There is nothing exciting and with so much mudslinging among senior leaders, he preferred to stay away from politics as coming here would lead him to a difficult situation as he would have been unable to take sides,” he said.
An NRI, Hardev Singh, said: “It seems the Punjab of his dreams is never going to get built. During last elections there were huge hopes from AAP but it didn’t come to power and this time it had included many turncoats in its fold. Farmer unions have also fielded its candidates which has complicated the situation.”
