People donate blood, pledge organs

SAHNEWAL: The Rehras Sewa Society organised a blood donation carnival at Mohini Resorts, Chandigarh Road, Ludhiana, in which more than 1,000 units of blood were collected.

The Rehras Sewa Society organised a blood donation carnival at Mohini Resorts, Chandigarh Road, Ludhiana, in which more than 1,000 units of blood were collected.

The Rehras Sewa Society is a non-profit organisation that manages the blood supply banks all over Punjab. It is promoted by youngsters to bring a progressive change in the existing social set up by saving lives through blood donation.

In the mega blood donation carnival, more 1000 units of blood were collected by teams of the Civil Hospital, Ludhiana, Raghunath Hospital, Ludhiana Krishna Charitable Hospital, Ludhiana, Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana, Rajindera Hospital, Patiala and Johal Hospital, Jalandhar.

The venue wore a festive look as more than 5,000 people visited the venue, including blood donors and their families, volunteers of Rehras Sewa Society, doctors and the medical teams and members of various other organizations like Khalsa Aid. An amazing sight to see at this Carnival were teenage donors, large number of female donors and also couples who donated together. Another unique feature was more than 100 people pledged to donate their eyes and organs.

Among the renowned personalities who visited to donate blood and inspire donors were Padma Shri and renowned Punjabi Poet Surjit Pattar, Raj Kumar Chaudhary ACP Crime Ludhiana and social activist Anmol Kwatra.

Padma Shri Surjit Pattar, while addressing the gathering said “It is heartening to see so many people serving humanity by donating blood for strangers. Blood donation is an ideal service to humanity and there is no bigger gift of God.”

“India faces a shortage of three million blood units in a year. This shortage can be easily eliminated if only an additional 2 per cent of India’s youth donate blood, just once in a year. The Rehras Sewa Society is conferred with the state award by the Punjab State Blood Transfusion Council (PSBTC) two times, consecutively (2016, 2017) since its origin,” shared Sukhminder Singh Kairon.

81 units of blood collected

Ludhiana: Keeping in view the shortage of blood that civil Hospital had been grappling with in the past, a blood donation Camp was held at 17 FAD Baddowal Cantonment. Camp was held with the help of Blood Bank Civil Hospital Ludhiana.

During the camp 81 units of blood were collected. Blood Transfusion Officer of Civil Hospital, Dr GS Grewal said that more and more people should come forward for donating blood. “It is only human who can donate blood for the cause of others as it cannot be produced in the factories like medicines. People should mark their special occasions by donating blood,” he said.
