Ludhiana, June 15
The Senior Citizens’ Welfare Association, Ludhiana, (SCWAL) organised a function on Wednesday at Rotary Bhawan, Sarabha Nagar, Ludhiana, to commemorate World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. It was attended by over 150 senior citizens, including members of the SCWAL and delegates from other senior citizens organisations in Ludhiana and Heavenly Palace, Doraha.
Dr Sardara Singh Johl, chief guest on the occasion, said elderly deserve all help from society as well as the government to lead a comfortable and dignified life. He exhorted representatives of the senior citizens associations to get united so that their voice is heard by society and the government. Guest of honour Dr DR Bhatti (retd), former DGP, Punjab, said it is primarily duty of parents to instill respect for elders in their children.
Balbir Singh, Chairman, SCWAL, said abuse of elders needs to be controlled. Ashok Patiyal, Advocacy Officer, Help Age India, Chandigarh, told about extent of abuse of elders in India based on surveys carried out by Help Age.
Dr Kanwaljit Kaur Dhaliwal from PAU discussed the problem of abuse of elderly and suggested possible ways to tackle the situation. Inderpreet Kaur, District Social Security Officer, Ludhiana, talked about the schemes of the state government for the welfare of older persons.
SP Karkara, Life Patron, SCWAL spoke about the problems being faced by the senior citizens in general like inadequate medical care, lack of security etc.
