The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notices to the Centre, Amazon Prime Video and Excel Entertainment Pvt Ltd on a petition alleging that web series “Mirzapur” tarnished the historical and cultural image of the town in Uttar Pradesh by showing it as a “city of goons”.

A Bench, headed by Chief Justice of India SA Bobde, asked them to respond to the petition filed by Sujeet Kumar Singh, a Mirzapur resident, who alleged that showing “shameless things” in the name of Mirzapur was an insult to the rich culture of the town.

Singh said he had filed the plea to protect the “historical and cultural value” of Mirzapur.
