Rs 50,000-cr scheme launched to create jobs for migrants

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched “Garib Kalyan Rojgar Abhiyan” to boost livelihood opportunities of migrant workers who have been hit hard by the Covid pandemic.

• The programme will run for 125 days in 116 districts across six states — Bihar, UP, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha and Rajasthan
• It seeks to create infrastructure worth Rs50,000 crore through public works that support job creation locally in rural parts of the country

The job opportunities would be in public work and development projects having a cumulative outlay of Rs 50,000 crore in villages. Seeking to provide jobs locally to returnees, PM Modi launched the campaign from Telihar village in Khagaria district of Bihar through a video-conference.

“It will ensure self-respect to workers and progress of villages,” PM Modi said at the time of the launch, adding it would also strengthen the “Aatm Nirbhar” campaign. He assured that the Centre and the state governments were concerned about the welfare of the poor and the migrants. Stressing modernisation of villages, he referred to farmers being directly linked to the market and the Centre’s investment of Rs 1,00,000 crore for linkages like cold storage facilities.

The campaign will be implemented through the Rural Development Ministry for 125 days. It will involve implementation of 25 different types of projects related to basic infrastructure in villages like rural housing for the poor, plantations, provision of drinking water through Jal Jeevan mission, panchayat bhavans, community toilets, rural mandis, roads and other infrastructure like cattle sheds and anganwadi bhavans.
