Nawanshahr, February 19
Members of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Nawanshahr unit, in a meeting organised for district doctors and IMA members, hailed the verdict of the Ludhiana court announcing one-year life imprisonment and penalty to three of the family members of a patient who attacked doctors and damaged the property of the Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) in 2018.
IMA state general secretary Paramjit Singh Maan while lauding the judgment of the Ludhiana court said incidents of doctors being attacked by families of patients had become common these days. In case a patient dies, the family goes on a rampage. It is shameful that doctors who save patients’ lives were nowadays made to run for their lives. He said: “The IMA wholeheartedly welcomes the judgment and we believe it would help in safeguarding doctors’ rights and preventing hospital property.
“The judgment will also act as a warning for all those who blame doctors for the death of their patients and indulge in violence inside hospitals.
IMA state president Navjot Dahiya said: “Times have changed. Today, neither students respect teachers nor patients have respect for doctors. People think they can buy anything with money, but this is not true. Doctors are not God and they try every possible measure to save lives,” he said, adding that they appreciate the IMA, Ludhiana unit, and doctors there for strongly putting forward their case and achieving the much-needed judgment.
