Chandigarh, February 4
Light to moderate rain and thundershowers occurred at several places during the past 24 hours, resulting in day temperatures remaining below normal at a few places in the state.
The night temperatures, however, were a few degrees above normal at several places, though these are expected to fall in the next few days.
The highest amount of rainfall, 5.4 mm, was recorded in Patiala followed by Amritsar with 4.2 mm. Some districts received only a small amount of rain while a few remained dry.
Gurdaspur was the coldest in the state, recording the lowest maximum as well as the minimum temperature. While the highest deviation from normal in maximum and minimum temperature was experienced in Amritsar.
The maximum temperature was in the range of 14.5 degrees Celsius in Gurdaspur to 19.6 degrees Celsius in Patiala, which was up to 3.8 degrees below the normal temperature.
The lowest minimum temperature ranged from 8 degrees Celsius in Gurdaspur to 12.7 degrees Celsius in Faridkot, which was up to 5.7 degrees above the normal temperature.
According to a weather bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday, a western disturbance is prevailing as a trough in middle tropospheric westerlies along with an induced cyclonic circulation over north-west Rajasthan and Pakistan in lower tropospheric levels.
Under the influence of these systems, light isolated rain is likely over parts of Punjab on February 5, with dry weather thereafter. A fall in minimum temperatures by 2-4 degrees during the next three days is also expected in the state, with no significant change thereafter.
Light to moderate rain and snowfall accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning is also very likely at a few places in Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand till February 6, which could affect the weather in Punjab.
