Chandigarh, January 19

A local court has denied bail to Jagtar Singh Hawara who is serving the life term at the Tihar jail in Delhi for the assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh.

Hawara had moved the bail application last week in the two cases registered against him by the Chandigarh police in 2005.

The cases were registered against him under Sections 121, 121A, 122 and 153 of the IPC and 4, 5, 6 of the Explosives Act 1884 in 2005 in Chandigarh.

Hawara is facing criminal cases in Chandigarh and Mohali after he was again arrested in 2005 in the infamous Burail jailbreak case. Hawara had applied for parole. One of the conditions for the parole is that the accused must get bail in the cases which are pending in courts.

The cases under the IPC were registered for waging or attempting to wage a war or abetment to waging a war against the Government of India.

Hawara was arrested along with his other accomplices after the assassination of Beant Singh. In 2004, he escaped from the Burail jail by digging a tunnel and was again arrested in June 2005.
