An alleged business of self-inflicting of injuries at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital (GGSMCH) to influence medico legal reports (MLRs) has come to the fore. The involvement of a hospital employee is the scam is even more shocking.

The emergency wing of the hospital has written a complaint to the police, demanding action into this scandal. The doctors said such incidents would severely damage the hospital’s reputation.

In a complaint to the police, it has been alleged that on September 8 during evening hours when doctors and auxiliary staff were busy handling a heavy rush of patients in the emergency ward, an attendant opened the room of a staffer without her permission and used it for fabricating injuries on some persons to help them settle scores with their opponents.

While the police are investigating the complaint, a study conducted by the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology of the medical college, has revealed that of 200 cases of injuries and assault examined at the hospital in the recent past, 26 reportedly involved self-inflicting of injuries.

Dr DS Bhullar, Chief Medical Officer, in his report, said injuries were inflicted by the accused persons in 26 cases to help people level false charges of assault against their opponents. In some cases, simple injuries were altered to appear severe to seek strict punishment for the opponents.

While in other cases, prisoners got the injuries fabricated to substantiate a charge of atrocities against a jail or police official or by cop, reads the report.

The illegal trend of fabricating injuries is not just confined to men. In four cases, women had got injuries inflicted on themselves to take on their rivals. This practice is more prevalent in rural areas in comparison to urban, the report says.
