Having laid out her own terms ahead of talks for a patch-up with Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Badal, former chief of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) Jagir Kaur has said she could return if most of the amendments proposed by her in the religious body are agreed upon.
A former Akali Dal minister and ex-MLA from Bholath, Jagir Kaur has said one of her primary conditions will be consent for setting up an independent parliamentary board to decide SGPC candidates.
“Instead of the SAD leadership, it should be the members of this board who would finalise the candidates for the polls. The candidates should not be anyone like an ex-sarpanch or a SAD leader, who need to be obliged. Rather, he should be a man who has knowledge about gurmat, should have some recognisable work in religion to his credit and have a clean background,” she added.
Asked if she was also pitching for herself for the post of SGPC president again, Jagir Kaur said, “I have served in the SGPC for 28 years. If not me, anyone capable to lead the SGPC could come forward. Once appointed the chief, the SAD leaders should not interfere in the functioning of the religious body and let the chief take independent, strong decisions for the good of the panth.”
