Amritsar, July 6

The Amritsar police have got the custody of Lawrence Bishnoi, a gangster, for five more days in connection with his alleged involvement in an earlier case of killing another gangster Ranbir Singh, alias Rana Kandowalia, in August last year.

Amid tight security cover, Bishnoi, the alleged ‘mastermind’ of Sidhu Moosewala’s murder, was produced in a local court today as his custody was about to end. He was brought here on transit remand from Mansa on June 28.

Confirming this, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and order) Parminder Singh Bhandal said Bishnoi was in the custody till July 6. The local court had extended his custody till July 11 in the Rana Kandowalia murder case, he said. An investigation led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Investigation) Rashpal Singh was still underway in this connection, he added.

Bhandal said in view of the security aspect Bishnoi would be shifted to Kharar again.

Earlier, hours after getting his eight-day remand on June 28, the Amritsar commissionerate police had shifted Bishnoi back to Kharar’s Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) office, where he was being interrogated in singer Sidhu Moosewala’s murder case.

Bishnoi’s remand was still required in connection with his suspected involvement in the case of Rana Kandowalia, who was shot dead in August last year in Amritsar, said Bhandal.

Kandowalia, who was facing 15 criminal cases, including those of murder and attempted murder, succumbed to injuries on August 4, 2021, a day after he was shot at by four persons in Amritsar-based private hospital where he had gone to enquire about his cousin’s health. Bishnoi’s name had emerged during the probe.

Ironically, police teams from Malout and Hoshiarpur had also reached Amritsar court, but the court extended Bishnoi’s remand to Amritsar police commissionerate.
