On the recommendation of the Justice Mehtab Singh Gill Commission, the state police have ordered the cancellation of 301 FIRs registered during the SAD-BJP’s 10-year tenure.
The commission submitted its 14th interim report to CM Capt Amarinder Singh today detailing the complaints received and action taken by the police. It was alleged that the police were not taking immediate action on the recommendation of the commission, which defeated the purpose of constituting such a panel.
The report mentions that 2,507 complaints have been taken up by the commission, of which 382 were found false. The remaining have been dismissed.
The police have initiated action against cops allegedly held responsible for the registration of false cases. The commission reported that the police have initiated proceedings under Section 182 CrPc against civilian complainants in 33 false FIRs. Under this section, the police can book those lodging a false complaint. The commission report says suitable monetary compensation has been ordered to the alleged victims in 29 cases.
The panel was constituted in April 2017, after the Congress formed the government in the state. The party had promised setting up such a commission on the demand of its workers, who had alleged they were harassed during the SAD-BJP regime due to political vendetta.
