Chandigarh, January 19
Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions are likely to continue over the plains of the Northwest for the next three days, while dense to very dense fog may continue to prevail over the region for another five days.
According to the Meteorological Department, during the past 24 hours, cold wave conditions prevailed over some places in Punjab and Haryana. The minimum temperatures were in the range of 2° to 5° C in Haryana, which were below normal by 2° to 4°C, and in the range of 6° to 10°C over most parts of Punjab, Chandigarh and Delhi. Dense to very dense fog was also witnessed in most parts of these three states.
The highest maximum temperature recorded in Punjab was 21.6°C in Pathankot, while the lowest minimum temperature was 3.1°C in Patiala. In Haryana, the highest maximum temperature was 22°C at Narnaul, while the lowest minimum temperature was recorded at 2.3°C in Mahendragarh. Both the states remained dry.
According to the department, jet stream winds of the order of 130 to 140 knots (240-260 kmph) at an altitude of 12,600 metres above the mean sea level were prevailing over the plains of North India.
These jet stream winds were leading to subsidence of cold air and enhancing cold wave conditions over the North India. Similar intensity of jet streams would likely continue during the next three to four days.
