Jalandhar, February 16

On the call of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha and trade unions, the Bharat Bandh call in Jalandhar and peripheral towns of Doaba evoked a mixed response on Friday.

The day started usually with students reaching schools and colleges in time. The attendance in schools, however, remained about 20 per cent as school buses did not ply and the parents had to pick and drop their kids to school.

The board exams by the PSEB and CBSE went normal and students were allowed to pass through all blockades.

The morning supplies of milk, dairy products and other daily need items were available as usual. But all markets remained shut from 8 am to 4 pm. Shops and markets opened in the evening and people went out as they avoided commuting in day time.

The farmers blocked highways at PAP Chowk in Jalandhar, Parbhat Chowk and Naloyian Chowk in Hoshiarpur and entry and exit points of all towns, including Kartarpur, Bhogpur, Adampur, Nakodar, Shahkot, Kapurthala, Nawanshahr and Phagwara.

The leaders of all unions, including the BKU (Doaba), BKU (Rajewal), BKU (Ugrahan), BKU (Qadian), Doaba Kisan Sangharsh Committee and Kirti Kisan Union blocked highways at various locations. There, however, was no blockade on the movement of vehicles within the city.

The commuters had to wait for over three-four hours at the Jalandhar bus stand to catch a bus as no Roadways or private bus plied between noon and 4 pm. The truckers too remained completely off road affecting supplies of bread, eggs, vegetables, fruits and other perishable items.
