The Punjab Government will provide “government and private jobs” to youngsters who give up drugs after rehabilitation and training,  Health and Family Welfare Minister Brahm Mohindra said here on Monday.

Asserting that Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh had given his nod to the proposal, he said the government would open skill training centres where such youngsters would be employed after training.

The minister countered reports attributing over a dozen deaths in the past one month to drug abuse, saying “until now, only two deaths have been reported in Nawanshahr. It is very difficult to maintain data as victims’ families deny post-mortem out of social stigma”.

Talking to The Tribune at the launch of state-level “Anti -Diarrhoea Campaign” here, Mohindra said: “The government will create job opportunities both within government and private sectors to ensure rehabilitation of addicts who give up drugs.”

“Drug addicts need love and care. We should hate drugs, not addicts. Instead, we should ensure that they are taken to rehab centres,” he said.
