Boxers bring home 4 gold in Asian Junior Boxing

New Delhi, August 29

Four Indian boxers won gold medals at the Asian junior championships in Dubai today. Rohit Chamoli (48kg) and Bharat Joon (+81kg) won their finals in the men’s section, while Vishu Rathee (48kg) and Tanu (52kg) bagged the top prize in the women’s section.

Chamoli defeated Mongolia’s Otgonbayar Tuvshinzaya in an intense final, rallying after losing the opening round to prevail 3-2. Joon got the better of Kazakhstan’s Yerdos Sharipbek 5-0. Gaurav Saini signed off with a silver after losing men’s 70kg final 5-0 to Uzbekistan’s Boltaev Shavkatjon.

Rathee defeated Uzbekistan’s Bakhtiyorova Robiyakhon before Tanu beat Tomiris Myrzakul of Kazakhstan 3-2. However, Muskan (46kg) had to be content with a silver after losing to Uzbekistan’s Ganieva Gulsevar.

India have already won six bronze medals in the junior event after Devika Ghorpade (50kg), Aarzoo (54kg) and Supriya Rawat (66kg) lost in the women’s semifinals, while Ashish (54kg), Anshul (57kg) and Ankush (66kg) lost in the men’s last-four. — PTI
