New Delhi, July 15
The Supreme Court today agreed to hear next week the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) plea seeking to amend its constitution with regard to the tenure of its office-bearers, including president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah.
Representing BCCI, senior advocate PS Patwalia told a Bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana that the application was filed two years ago but it could not be listed due to the Covid pandemic. “Please list this matter for urgent hearing because amendments to the constitution have been in the pipeline for two years,” Patwalia said.
Following a spot-fixing scandal in the IPL, the Justice Lodha Committee had recommended reforms in BCCI, and the recommendations were accepted by the top court. According to its recommendations, there should be a three-year cooling-off period for the BCCI’s office-bearers.
