Ludhiana, February 14

Notorious liquor smuggler Lakhwinder, alias Lucky Dhidh, is again in news. He, along with his sons Amanpreet Amna and Gurvinder Singh Kannu, was booked by the Haibowal police on the charge of liquor smuggling after 60 cases of illicit liquor were recovered from his office at Joshi Nagar.

CCTV cameras keep tabs on police

  • Police sources said the smuggler had installed several CCTV cameras near his godown and house which were connected to his mobile phone. Whenever the police went to raid the place, the smuggler would get alerted seeing them on the phone and easily flee the office before the arrival of the raiding team.

The Haibowal SHO, Inspector Mohan Lal, said they received a tip-off that liquor smuggler Lucky had again brought a huge consignment of illicit liquor and stored it in his godown-cum-office at Joshi Nagar. A police party raided the office on Wednesday and seized 60 cases of illicit liquor.

The SHO said the accused was already facing several cases of liquor smuggling registered in Ludhiana and Mohali. He also faces a case for attacking a police party.

A few months ago, the police had nabbed him on gambling charge along with 14 others at Ghumar Mandi and seized Rs 6 lakh in cash.

The SHO said raids were on to nab the accused and his two sons who had absconded.

Ex-CP had broken smuggler’s supply line

About three years ago, former police commissioner RN Dhoke had cracked down on Lucky’s network and a raid was conducted at his godown. The police seized 70 cases of liquor and nabbed the smuggler along with his sons.

Police yet to tag him as “Bad Character”

Despite Lucky Dhidh facing several smuggling cases, he is yet to be declared a “Bad Character” by the Ludhiana police. His alleged links with some corrupt policemen in the department work as a shield for him. When asked in this regard, CP Rakesh Agrawal said whosoever was facing more than four criminal cases would be declared a “Bad Character” and he had already passed instructions to all police officials in his team. If Lucky falls in the category, he will also be declared a “Bad Character”.
