Karnal, April 12

Cricketer Suresh Raina and his wife Priyanka Chaudhary’s ‘Gracia Raina Foundation’ started a reproductive health and mental well-being programme for women inmates of the Karnal jail on Friday.

The objective behind the programme was to empower women living behind the bars.

A part of the foundation’s ‘Every Mother’ programme, a workshop was organised in the jail, which was attended by 70 women inmates. The session was led by Priyanka who highlighted how crucial it was for women to focus on acquiring new skills while living at a correctional facility so that they were able to land a decent job, earn money and be independent.

“I know when you come to jail, you give up on certain rights, but that shouldn’t be at the cost of your health. I am here to share knowledge about how you can take care of your reproductive and mental health. Most women here are young and this is the right age to stay positive and be supporting of each other,” she said.

Dr Nivedita Raizada, senior gynaecologist, Rainbow Hospital, New Delhi, and Keshav Sharma, psycho-oncologist, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram, made the inmates aware about nutrition, menstrual health, menopause, pregnancy, family planning, breast and cervical cancer, and self care with body hygiene. — TNS
