Amritsar, July 15

The government is all set to dedicate the extensions of the Bhandari bridge to people. Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu and PWD Minister Vijay Inder Singla will mark the opening of the same at a function on Monday.

PWD Executive Engineer Jasbir Singh Sodhi said the work on two extension bridges to connect the Bhandari bridge, on which the work was going on for years, has been completed. He said the bridges would be opened for people in presence of Sidhu and Singla.

The Bhandari bridge, which connects the old city areas with the new city, is the main traffic intersection. During the last few years, due to increase in population and vehicular traffic, traffic jams have become a frequent phenomena at the Bhandari bridge. Sodhi said the new extensions would solve the problem of traffic to a great extent.

The bridge extension, starting from the Hall Gate, would allow vehicles to cross over to the railway station side. The other extension from the Jalandhar road side would connect the traffic with elevated road and facilitate in crossing Bhandari bridge.

As per the plan, the traffic coming from the bus stand side would be diverted towards the new road through Old Sabzi Mandi. By taking the extension bridge from Hall Gate, commuters could cross the railway tracks without having to travel on the congested old Bhandari bridge.
