Amritsar, January 17

The textile sector, under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), is passing through tough times, said Piara Lal Seth, president of the Punjab Pradesh Beopar Mandal (PPBM).

He said the PPBM had shot off a letter to the office of Prime Minister suggesting measures to boost the production of textile sector.

Piara Lal Seth said the textile sector was facing severe competition in raw material from China and some other countries, high taxes and no assistance for technological up gradation.

He said: “The PPBM demands national textile policy which has been stalled since 2016.” He further added that there must be separate policy for organised and unorganised sector in the textile industry.

The basic material for textile sector in India is polyster, viscose and woollen yarn. All these are being controlled by big corporate houses. “Polyster fiber and yarn is monopolised by Reliance Industries, Viscose firber by Grasim Industries (Birla Group) and greasy wool is imported from Australia,” he said.

The city-based textile and shawl industry has demanded exemption from the GST, he said. The beopar mandal demands technology upgradation for about 22 lakh power looms in the country with 20 per cent capital subsidy.

The Punjab Pradesh Beopar Mandal has demanded tax holiday for textile sector in border districts of Punjab, upgradation of textile-related ITIs and polytechnics, uniform power tariff in the country.
