The move of the Government Medical College (GMC), prohibiting its MBBS students from wearing jeans trousers, capri, skirts and shorts on its premises, has sparked a controversy.

Councillor Sandhya Sikka, the first woman Leader of the Opposition in the Municipal Corporation (MC) House, said, “I am in favour of girls wearing jeans trousers as these make them more comfortable. It brings a sense of liberty.”

She said she couldn’t term the decision good or bad without going through in what context it was imposed. “During the course of administration, there are several discipline-related issues which gain more focus, eclipsing the main work. So the administrators tend to take decisions with respect to to such situations,” she said.

A schoolteacher, seeking anonymity, said the management of her school didn’t allow staff to put on western clothes. “Even tight suits are prohibited. The ban on the Western apparel for the teaching staff has been imposed keeping in view teenage boys, who, sometimes, indulge in indecency,” she said.

Another teacher of a prominent public school said her institute encouraged its teaching staff to wear western clothing. She said they even wore suits without dupatta and it never created any trouble.
