Amritsar, October 26

The Government Medical College authorities have placed a final-year MBBS student under suspension for his alleged involvement in ragging of first-year students earlier last week.

The decision of suspension has been taken on the recommendation of the Anti-Ragging Committee at the medical institute. The authorities stated that the student, identified as Bhanu Vashisht, would remain suspended till the outcome of the inquiry.

The incident had occurred last week when a few final-year students had entered the hostel block meant for the first-year students and allegedly asked a student to remove his clothes. However, as someone conveyed the message immediately to the Hostel Superintendent on his phone, he rushed to the hostel.

The authorities stated that officials reached the hostel before things turned ugly. On seeing the faculty members, the final year students ran away from the place.

The hospital authorities stated that though no first-year student has filed a written complaint against any final-year student, they had entrusted the inquiry to the Anti-Ragging Committee.

College Principal Dr BS Bal said the college authorities were very strict on the issue. “We would not allow anyone to create indiscipline in the college,” he said, adding that the mobile numbers of the hostel management had earlier been made public, so that students can report such incidents in time.
