The rural police have arrested an Army man for allegedly killing his 2-year-old sister-in-law, identified as Punitha, of Palaiyu village, Madurai district, Tamil Nadu. The crime took place on Tuesday night.

The accused, Pandiya Rajan, lives in Beas Army Cantonment. The police have registered a case under Section 302 of the IPC in this connection.

His wife China Thai said Rajan slit her throat under the influence of alcohol. She said she was married to the accused around three years ago. She brought her two-year-old sister here for her better upbringing. The couple did not enjoyed cordial relations as he was an acute alcoholic and used to assault her frequently.

After consuming liquor on Tuesday night, he asked his wife to make some snacks. She obeyed, but the accused, finding its taste “inappropriate”, started thrashing her. According to her, she went to call her neighbours, but by the time they returned, Rajan had slit the girl’s throat. She was rushed to Army hospital where doctors declared her dead.

Parampal Singh, SSP, Amritsar rural, said China Thai was the second wife of Rajan who brought her two-year-old sister with her after marriage. He said the accused had been arrested.
