NCW team inspects women’s jail ward

AMRITSAR: A team from the National Commission for Women (NCW), led by Alok Rawat along with commission member Sukhman Giran, DIG, Prisons, Surinder Singh Saini and representatives from District Legal Services Authority visited the Amritsar Central Jail here yesterday.

Amritsar, February 28

A team from the National Commission for Women (NCW), led by Alok Rawat along with commission member Sukhman Giran, DIG, Prisons, Surinder Singh Saini and representatives from District Legal Services Authority visited the Amritsar Central Jail here yesterday.

Jail Superintendent Arshdeep Singh Gill and other jail officers accorded a warm welcome to the team that inspected the female ward, barracks and other facilities being provided to women prisoners. He informed the team about the free legal aid clinic, crèche for children of prisoners, library, vocational training centre, meditation-cum-yoga centre and e-prison call system situated in the female ward.

Rawat also inaugurated a beauty saloon in the female ward. Members of the commission interacted with female inmates, heard their grievances and assured their earliest disposal. The team also interacted with foreign female prisoners and discussed their cases with jail authorities.

The NCW members also met members of different NGOs, including India Vision Foundation, Maitribodh and Art of Living working in the female ward.

Meanwhile, volunteer from the women inmates performed a yoga dance.
