Mystery shrouds the death of a married woman, who was found murdered at her residence in Azad Nagar area here on Wednesday. She was strangled to death and was alone when the incident took place.

The victim has been identified as Baljit Kaur, wife of Gurminder Singh, who is an assistant commandant of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and is posted in Chandigarh. The incident came to light when their son Jaipreet Singh (12) returned home from his school and found her dead. He raised an alarm immediately.

Though the police have registered a murder case against unknown persons, family members of the woman raised questions. The police have taken footage of CCTV camera installed opposite to their house. It showed two youths, with faces covered, ringing the house bell. The police have launched a manhunt to identify and arrest the suspects.

Kot Khalsa SHO Sanjiv Sharma said a case under Section 302 of the IPC had been registered on a statement by Balraj Singh, brother of the deceased. He said preliminary probe found that she was killed by some unknown persons. The motive behind the murder was yet to be ascertained.

Balraj Singh informed the police that Baljit Kaur was married to Gurminder in 2003 and the couple was blessed with a son in 2007. He said the police got the information around 12.30. They reached the spot immediately and a forensic team was also pressed into service to gather fingerprints and other clues from the spot. “We are yet to speak to deceased’s husband Gurminder Singh, who has been informed of the tragedy,” the SHO said.
