NSUI protests poor Class X result of PSEB

Members of the state unit of the National Student Union of India (NSUI) staged a protest against the state government regarding the poor result in Class X of the Punjab school education board (PSEB). Scores of National Students Union of India (NSUI) supporters joined the protest outside the office of District Education Office (DEO) here today. Students burnt an effigy of the Punjab Education Minister, Dr Daljeet Singh Cheema, during the protest.

The protesters were led by Punjab NSUI president Iqbal Singh Grewal, national secretary Jaswinder Singh Jassi, Amritsar Youth Congress president Vikas Soni and Amritsar NSUI president Arpan Aujhla. The NSUI demanded action against irresponsible teachers of government schools, who were responsible for the poor performance of students in Class X.

Punjab NSUI president Grewal said the government was not taking a serious note of the poor performance of students. He said, “Students studying in government schools are the upcoming future of the state and the SAD-BJP government has side lined the education system resulting in the failure of 1.25 lakh students in Class X.”

The local police detained the protesters, including national leaders of the NSUI, and took them to the Civil Lines police station. They were later released after two hours. Grewal said this attitude of the government regarding the education system was not tolerable. He demanded action against teachers, who remained absent from schools.

Grewal said, “The NSUI unit has started the drive against the Punjab education system from Amritsar. We will lodge this protest in every district of Punjab. If the SAD-BJP government is not able to improve this system, then it should resign so that the upcoming generation is not affected.”

NSUI national secretary Jaswinder Singh Jassi said 1.25 lakh students failed to clear the Class X exams in the state because of not getting proper education in government schools.” Jassi added that the state was facing shortage of teachers in government schools and moreover 6,000 posts of teacher were still lying vacant.

Amritsar youth congress president Vikas Soni said students, who were studying in government schools were not from well off families. It was the responsibility of the state government to provide them better education, he added.
