Amritsar, October 22

The railways will commence tonight the work to place massive cemented blocks over the railway lines to construct the incomplete portion of the BRTS bridge.

Vipan Purohit, Director, Amritsar railway station, said the civil work would stretch over a month. He informed that it would halt rail traffic for three to four hours during nights. However, it would not be a regular affair as it would depend upon the pending work. It required the diversion of only one train, he said.

After a long wait, heavy cranes have arrived for laying slabs for the ambitious BRTS project over the level crossing near the ROB. The railways is constructing the 52-metre long concrete and steel bridge for the state government’s BRTS project at a cost of nearly Rs 15 crore.

As many as three slabs of 170 tonnes each would be laid underneath the concrete slab of the bridge. In order to lift and place the extremely heavy girders, cranes from Delhi and the NCR region have been brought. The construction of the bridge would see completion of the 30.73-km track for the BRTS project, which is aimed at reducing the traffic mess and bottlenecks in the city.

City station gets director

The railways has appointed Vipan Purohit as the director of the city railway station that was categorised as A-1 station last year. The availability of director would ensure that the station functioned in the capacity of a centre of excellence for passengers.

Earlier, the non-availability of a regular official at this post compelled the railways authorities to shift High Officer Requisite (HOR) quota to Ferozepur, which houses divisional headquarters, under which the Amritsar railway station falls.
