The district consumer disputes redressal forum has directed a shopkeeper and an electric goods manufacturer to repair a resident's refrigerator within 30 days or replace it with a new one or refund Rs 22,000 charged as price.

The forum has further asked the shopkeeper and the manufacturer to pay Rs 3,000 as compensation for causing mental harassment and Rs 2,000 as litigation expenses.

Prem Chand, a resident of Chheharta, had filed a complaint against a shop stating that he had purchased a Whirlpool refrigerator with warranty for Rs 22,000. He added that during the warranty period, the machine's ice box stopped functioning. He added that on the advice of the shopkeeper, he even purchased a new electricity stabilizer but the problem was not solved. He added that his personal visits and verbal complaints did not result in the seller fulfilling his promise of warranty after which he had to send a legal notice.

As the opposite party did not appear, the forum proceeded ex-parte. It stated that in case the opposite party failed to get the machine repaired, it could replace it for refund the amount.
