Woman blames police for delay in arrests

Rupinder Pal Kaur, a resident of Kaloke village, accused the Amritsar rural police for not taking any action her husband and mother-in-law, who had allegedly tried to strangulate her. Both her husband, identified as Gurpreet Singh and his mother Jasbir Kaur, were booked by the Khilchian police on charges of attempt to murder.

In a press conference here today, Rupinder Pal Kaur alleged that a month had passed since the registration of case, but the police had not arrested the culprits, who enjoyed political patronage.

Rupinder said she was married to the accused in November last year. She alleged hat the accused was a habitual drug addict and had illicit relations with Hong Kong-based NRI woman.

She alleged that her husband and mother-in-law, Jasbir Kaur, used to harass her for bringing insufficient dowry, though her family had given enough gifts at the time of her marriage. She said the accused had demanded a car from her family. She alleged that on April 5, the accused tried to strangle her to death with the help of her ‘dupatta’. She said she was rescued by her brothers, Shamsher Singh and Kewal Singh. She alleged that earlier the police had dithered on the registration of the case. Now officials were deliberately delaying the arrest of the culprits on directions of a ruling party MLA.

Universal Human Rights Organisation, an NGO, has come out in the support of the victim. A member of the NGO, Satnam Singh Dhaliwal, said the accused managed to get an enquiry marked from an SP rank official. Dhaliwal said, “Though the investigation are under progress, it does not mean that the police should not arrest the accused.” He said they would be forced to knock at the doors of Punjab and Haryana High Court in case the police failed to arrest the accused.
