Members of the Democratic Teachers’ Front on Friday staged a protest over an incident in which some teachers had allegedly assaulted another teacher last week at Khemuana village here. Later, the protesting teachers met Superintendent of Police (City) Jaspal Singh and submitted a memorandum of demands.

The protesters said the police had adopted a “soft attitude” towards the accused and did not arrest him even after he was discharged from hospital. They raised slogans against the police for their alleged failure to arrest the accused and demanded immediate action in the matter.

Representatives from different unions of teachers Harjit Singh Jeeda, Aparpal Singh and Jagshir Singh Sahota, among other teachers, met the SP (City) and submitted a memorandum of demands. In the memorandum, the union members had demanded the arrest of the accused who had allegedly attacked Resham Singh last week.

The police had registered an FIR against the teacher, but after that another group of teachers got a cross FIR registered against Resham Singh and eight other teachers, including four women teachers.

Later, the union members gathered at Ambedkar Chowk and raised slogans against the police. The protesters demanded that the police must arrest the accused and apply non-bailable sections against him.

Following which, the SP held a meeting with the SSP, Bathinda, and gave an assurance to the teachers that an appropriate action would be taken within five days in this regard.
