A farming family from Lande Rode village here is setting an example for others in managing paddy stubble without burning it. Gurtek Singh and his daughter Sandeep Kaur are collecting paddy stubble from their six acres to use these as dry fodders for livestock.

Sandeep, a student of XII, actively helps her father in agriculture.

Sharing their experience, they said for the past some years, they had not burnt stubble.

Gurtek Singh said, “We pick up all stubble from the field with a tractor-trolley and use it as fodder for next one year. We mix it with green fodder or wheat straw.”

He added that stubble is also used as mattress for animals in winters, which saves them from cold.

“Small and marginal farmers can manage stubble easily if they use it as fodder by mixing it with routine animal feed or a bedding material for animals,” he said.

On their efforts, MK Aravind Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, Muktsar, said, “Other farmers should also follow them and use stubble as fodder and mattress for animals.”

He said many farmers were adopting this method to manage stubble, but still there was a need for awareness among those who were still burning the crop residue.
