Motivated by the anti-stubble burning campaign of the Punjab Government, Lakhwinder Singh Brar, a farmer from Jai Singh Wala village, has shunned the practice from this season onwards.

Taking on his duty towards the environment, Brar decided not to burn paddy stubble and instead make bales of the same using mechanised baler.

Brar, while giving this information, said he does farming on 31 acres. Like other farmers, he too used to commit the blunder of putting paddy stubble on fire.

But the harmful effect of the smoke that billows out of it and the consequent loss of fertility of soil made him decide against it this season.

Also, stubble burning leads to thick smoke, which lowers visibilility, that led to many tragic accidents last year. Keeping in view this aspect, and out of his love for the environment, he decided to look for alternative options.

He contacted the baler operators who aid in harvesting the crop and making stacks of paddy.

“An acre of paddy yields around two tonnes of stubble. Burning it kills the farmer-friendly insects as well as adversely affecting the soil. Now, the same paddy will enrich my fields”, he said.

“I am sure of registering a higher agriculture output in the years to come,” Brar added.
