The Chandigarh State Consumer Commission Building in Sector 19, here, upgraded its infrastructure with consumer-friendly ‘single-window service’ and the inauguration of a hi-tech conference hall.

The conference hall was thrown open to the public on Wednesday by UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore in the presence of Justice (retd) Jasbir Singh, president, State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Chandigarh. He was accompanied by Manoj Kumar Parida, UT Adviser, Ajoy Kumar Sinha, Secretary, Consumer Affairs, and Mandeep S Brar, UT Deputy Commissioner.

Justice (retd) Jasbir Singh expressed his gratitude to the UT Administration for computerising the working of the Chandigarh consumer fora and installing a solar energy generation system. Further, for the convenience of consumers, a single-window facility has been created for enquiry and receipt of consumer complaints at the entrance of the building on the ground floor.

“The single-window service implements the objective of the Consumer Protection Act, which aims at easing the redressal of consumer grievances. The conference hall facility is a beneficial gift to the city consumers in the run-up to World Consumer Day on March 15,” remarked Rakesh Singh Rawat, secretary, State Commission.

He said Chandigarh is the first city to provide such modern facilities to consumers.

“Chandigarh also leads the country in per capita filing of consumer complaints. Disposal percentage of cases is at a national high of 98 per cent,” said Pankaj Chandgothia, consumer rights activist.

The conference hall will be used for holding seminars on consumer rights and enabling legal aid for poor consumers. Conferences will also be held for the enlightenment of businessmen, law students, panchayat members, etc., to apprise them of the duties of traders, manufacturers and service providers towards the consumers.
