Car catches fire on Airport Road

MOHALI: A person had a narrow escape after a Mahindra Quanto car he was driving accidentally caught fire on the Airport road near Sector 82 on Thursday evening.

A person had a narrow escape after a Mahindra Quanto car he was driving accidentally caught fire on the Airport road near Sector 82 on Thursday evening.

Sources said the incident took place around 8.15 pm on a busy stretch of the road leading towards Zirakpur.

The car owner, who noticed some smoke billowing out of the vehicle, stopped to see the problem. An eyewitness said the vehicle caught fire within minutes and was completely burnt.

The police said a fire tender was rushed to the spot to douse the flames. A police official said that no one was hurt in the incident.

Simrat Pal Singh, a Sector 69 resident, who was passing through, said the vehicle suffered heavy damage. “Both tyres burst after the flames spread. The incident led to traffic congestion on the road,” he said.

Police officials said short-circuit was suspected to be the reason behind the incident.
