CHANDIGARH:Wild growth, stagnant water and heaps of garbage in the city have become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other insects but Municipal Corporation continues to be in a deep slumber.

Chandigarh, September 14

Wild growth, stagnant water and heaps of garbage in the city have become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other insects but Municipal Corporation continues to be in a deep slumber.

Wild growth can be seen in several green belts and the roadside areas. In a random check, it was found that in Mani Majra, from where most cases of chikungunya, dengue and malaria are being reported, a green belt adjoining the cremation ground had huge wild growth. Even roadside area near the Housing Board Chowk has unwanted growth.

It was also found that water was stagnant in several areas in Mani Majra. Stagnant water and heaps of garbage could be seen near the slum area in Colony No 4. Situation is no different in other small villages of Chandigarh and some parts of the city. Even water accumulation, blocked road gullies and dumped garbage could be seen around the Sector 26 grain market area.

“When I go to cycling in the morning I can see water leakage at different places and ultimately, this water accumulates somewhere and gives rise to diseases. The Municipal Corporation must wake up from its deep slumber. Even in my sector, wild growth is there opposite a gurdwara,” rued Gurujusjit Singh, a resident of Sector 44.

Commissioner Baldeo Purushartha did not bother to answer repeated phone calls made by Chandigarh Tribune. However, another senior officer said they visit the area from where they get any complaint and redress the problem. — TNS
