City resident walks free in drugs case

A local court has acquitted a city resident of the charges of carrying heroin and banned injections after the prosecution failed to prove its case.

Ankit Marwaha (29) was arrested with 10 grams of heroin and six banned injections last year. However, the police story did not check out in the court, following which the Sector 41 resident was acquitted.

As per defence counsel Deepan Sharma, the police had concocted a story and implicated Ankit. He claimed that the police did not adhere to the Section 50 of the NDPS Act, which says that the accused has to be informed that his checking could be carried out in front of a gazetted officer or a magistrate. However, the same was not done and Ankit was let-off for want of evidence.

As per the police case, a team was checking vehicles at Dadu Majra on January 4, 2017. Around 8.50 pm, the police saw a man walking towards them from the Maloya Colony side. However, on seeing the police, he turned back and picked up his pace. On suspecting that he might be carrying stolen or snatched items, the police chased him and nabbed him.

As per the police, Ankit could not produce any licence or permit for the contraband and was arrested. A case was registered against him under Sections 21 and 22 of the NDPS Act.
