Frequent checkings to control overspeeding on roads

It's good to see statistical data analysis with regard to road accidents taking place in various states and UTs in 2017 as provided by the research wing of the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways ("Drive slow from 6pm to 9 pm") in Chandigarh Tribune dated November 11. The news item said during not so late night hours i.e between 6 pm to 9 pm, maximum number of 81 accidents (24%) took place, followed by late night hours' span of 9 pm to 12 midnight where 70 accidents (20%) took place on Chandigarh roads in 2017. This has put our notions wrong that most accidents happen during late night hours due to drunken driving. It should be noted down that the prime reason for fatal road accidents across the country is overspeeding. The authorities concerned must make use of the important and reliable data available with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and take necessary precautionary steps to control accidents during peak accident time zones in their respective states. Also, public awareness drives as well as frequent checkings and challaning of violators should be carried out to control overspeeding.

Lack of waste segregation awareness

Shortage of funds has not only stalled the development works of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, but has almost stopped its other activities, except entertainment events. No campaigning has been carried out to create awareness among masses and garbage collectors regarding segregation of waste. The Municipal Corporation should create awareness before implementing such schemes.

Shorten queues at CNG stations

With the increasing number of CNG-fitted vehicles and three-wheelers in Chandigarh, one can see long serpentine queues at Indian oil pumps just three in Chandigarh and one in Mohali. It is surprising that the government agency responsible for the supply of CNG cannot see this. The management of the gas pumps are least interested in managing the queues. I request the Chandigarh administration and Indian Oil Corporation to take effective measures to improve the situation.
