Chandigarh, November 17

An interstate committee of the UT, Haryana and Punjab has approved the construction of a ring road around the city.

The decision came during a meeting of the high-level committee of Haryana, Punjab and UT regarding integrated planning and development of Chandigarh region held here today.

Haryana Chief Secretary DS Dhesi, Punjab Chief Secretary Karan Avtar Singh and Adviser to the UT Administrator Parimal Rai attended the meeting.

The proposed ring road will reduce traffic congestion on the city’s arterial roads — Madhya Marg and Dakshin Marg. It will link the expressway project of GMADA near Mullanpur and Banur. The propsed ring road will go up to Baddi and some parts of Haryana.

During the meeting, it was also decided to improve connectivity in the tricity.  It was decided that Punjab and Haryana will be involved in the making of a comprehensive mobility plan of Chandigarh. The UT has already started the work on it. Discussions were also held on ensuring seamless connectivity between the UT and the states of Haryana and Punjab.

The neighbouring states have agreed to construct a 700-metre road between Sector 20, Panchkula, and Peer Muchalla in Punjab, and construct a bridge over Ghaggar river to facilitate traffic coming from Sector 25 and 26 in Panchkula. It was also decided to construct an alternative road to the Chandigarh international airport. A technical survey will be conducted for the purpose.

It was decided that Haryana would start the work of widening of a road in the Panchkula area leading to Hallomajra in Chandigarh to ensure free flow of traffic.

Punjab and Chandigarh agreed on approaching the Railway department for getting an RUB constructed near the Baltana railway crossing.

The Administration informed that it would acquire land to connect with two additional approach roads to Punjab — one will connect at Vikas Marg and the other Dakshin Marg.
