Chandigarh, March 12

Traffic on Jan Marg from Matka Chowk to the Sector 16/17 light point has been closed for shifting sewer and storm drainage system pipelines.

The shifting of pipelines is required for the construction of a pedestrian underpass between Sector 17 and Rose Garden. Sources in the Engineering Department said the sewer pipelines had been shifted and it would take a few more days to shift the storm water pipeline. He said once the work was completed, the road would be opened.

The work on the second phase of construction of the underpass will begin after the shifting work is completed. The construction work on the pedestrian underpass is being undertaken in two phases. While the foundation of the underpass is being laid on both sides of the road, the work for excavating the main carriageway in the second phase will start after the completion of the shifting work.

The sources said the traffic on both sides of the road would again be closed to carry out the work for the second phase. The underpass is being constructed under the Smart City project near the office of the RBI at an approximate cost of Rs 8 crore. It is part of the rejuvenation plan of Sector 17, prepared by a consultant.

The underpass will allow visitors to go directly to Rose Garden without crossing Jan Marg, one of the busiest roads in the city. The underpass will have both ramp and stairs. There is also a plan to beautify the entrance area of the underpass on both sides.
