Chandigarh, June 29

The five-day international workshop, being held at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), is revolving around one question — how would a non-sexist city look like?

The workshop is co-organised by Dr Anu Sabhlok, IISER, and Rohit Negi, Ambedkar University, Delhi.

During the conference, gender dimensions are being discussed in the urban context. The feminist and queer epistemological approaches will be figured out. Field visits will also be made to sites in and around Chandigarh, according to which a manifesto for the non-sexist city will be made.

The experts are revisiting Hayden’s 1980’s essay ‘What would a non-sexist city be like?’Five core topics from research papers — ‘Access to good role in society depends on higher education’,’Breastfeeding in public’, ‘Seperation of home and work’ and ‘Feminists notion of care’ — were discussed today.

Further, Dr Anu Sabhlok and Dr. Fluri, Associate Professor, University of Colorado, Boulder, said: “We always discuss these issues for research purposes and usually, they remain intact within the pages of a journal. So, we are organising the workshop to discuss various practical implications of the issues in the public sphere.”

On the last day, a manifesto for the non-sexist city will be prepared by conducting the field visits.
