Chandigarh, August 14

Teachers at government schools in Chandigarh on Tuesday wore black clothes to protest against the increase in school timings by 40 minutes.

The protest held on a call given by a joint action committee (JAC) of teachers.

They also protested an assault on a teacher at the GSSS, Sector 45, by a student and his parents. “Observing Black Day sends a strong message to the department that teachers are united for their common cause,” said JAC president Bhag Singh Kairon.

“We have appealed to the Chandigarh’s Education Department that before increasing the school timings, other provisions of the RTE Act such as lower pupil-teacher ratio, vacant posts, and setting up of teachers’ grievances cell should be fulfilled,” said JAC chairman Savinder Singh.

The leaders of JAC further appealed to the department to withdraw the orders as early as possible.
