Chandigarh, May 22

The University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS), Panjab University (PU), will now have its own PhD research centre. Earlier, faculty members had to go to the Department of Laws for enrolment of their students.

“We have sent a proposal to the PU authorities in this regard. It has been intimated to us verbally that it will be approved,” said Prof VK Rattan, Chairperson, UILS.

The UILS was started 14 years ago.

“Our faculty has been fulfilling all requirements as prescribed by the UGC for starting the PhD degree. Now, we have three professors. In 2015, we had started the LLM degree also. We want that the UILS centres of Ludhiana and Hoshiarpur would also get their students enrolled for PhD at our department,” said Professor Rattan.

Building extension

The UILS has also proposed for extension of its building.

“A two-storey building is coming up, which will have 12 classrooms, a seminar room and faculty rooms. At presentl, some teachers have to share their rooms,” said Professor Rattan.

Recently, the Centre for Constitution and Public Policy (CCPP), the Centre for Clinical Legal Education (CLLE) and the Centre for Trade Laws and Dispute Resolution (CTDR) have come up at the UILS for seminars, conferences and training of students in their relevant fields.

An MoU has been signed between UILS and Pepperdine University, USA, and Nottingham Trent University, UK, for student and faculty exchange programmes.

“In future, we are going to have students exchange programmes with the University of Wolverhampton, UK, and National Law Schools at Nagpur, Shimla and Assam,” said Professor Rattan.

The seminar and conference rooms will be equipped with the facility of videoconferencing.
