Panchkula, November 16

A pregnant woman was killed on the spot after the bike she was riding pillion was hit by a truck near Amravati Enclave here today. Her baby was delivered after her death at the Civil Hospital but it could not survive beyond a couple of hours. 

The woman, Sonia (22), was nine-month pregnant, said the police. She, along with her husband, was on their way home in Amravati Enclave when a truck hit their bike. She died on the spot. The body was rushed to the Civil Hospital where doctors at the Emergency were able to deliver the baby. Despite efforts by a team of doctors, the baby died within hours. The post-mortem of the woman’s body was conducted at the hospital this afternoon. The Pinjore SHO said, a case under Section 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC was registered against the unidentified driver of the truck. “We have impounded the truck. Its driver will be nabbed soon.”

The victim’s husband told the police that the truck hit the bike in the rear and the woman, who was riding pillion, died on the spot.

Dr Gopal Bhardwaj, Principal Medical Officer, Civil Hospital, said, “We tried our best to save the baby, but unfortunately we couldn’t.” —TNS
