LG okays power compensation proposal

NEW DELHI:Lt Governor Anil Baijal has approved the Aam Aadmi Party government’s proposal on compensating consumers for unscheduled electricity cuts exceeding an hour in the capital.

New Delhi, April 19

Lt Governor Anil Baijal has approved the Aam Aadmi Party government’s proposal on compensating consumers for unscheduled electricity cuts exceeding an hour in the capital.

The move came days after the Delhi Government sent the power department’s file to Baijal’s office following Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s approval.

“Approved proposal for issue of policy directions regarding payment of compensation to consumers in case of power failure @ArvindKejriwal and @SatyendarJain,” Baijal tweeted.

Henceforth, if private power distribution companies (discoms) fail to restore the power line within an hour, they are required to cough up penalty of Rs 50 per hour per consumer for the first two hours, followed by Rs 100 per hour per consumer. The amount will be adjusted in consumers' monthly electricity bill.

Kejriwal termed the power compensation policy a “revolutionary and innovative” step that will go on to make the power discoms directly accountable to people. – TNS
