Amritsar, March 28

An eyewitness in the infamous Siti Cable sex scandal attempted suicide by consuming some poisonous substance in front of some judges of the Supreme Court and the Punjab and Haryana High Court at a private hotel here today.

The judges were here to participate in a function on “Regulatory framework and dispute resolution in telecom, broadcasting and cable services sector”. Officials from the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) were also present there.

Those present on the dais included Justice Satish Kumar Mittal from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel from the Supreme Court, TDSAT Chairperson Justice Aftab Alam and TDSAT member Kuldip Singh.

Before taking the extreme step, Jaswinder Singh Jassi of Chowk Manna Singh threw copies of a suicide note wherein he blamed Fastway Cable owner Sarabjeet Singh Raju, a transporter and the husband of an SAD councillor for his plight.

He alleged these persons ruined his cable network business as he was a prime witness in the case. He had later turned hostile in the case. He said Raju and others nursed a grudge against him. He alleged he was getting death threats from them.

A large number of cable operators from all over the state had come here to listen to the dignitaries. As soon they got up from their chairs for tea break, Jaswinder Singh put forward his file alleging that nobody was listening to him. He shouted at the top of his voice, blaming Raju and others for his miserable life.

He said, “I will now die.” Immediately thereafter, he took out a bottle and drank its contents (some poisonous substance). Dr RS Waan, who is treating him, said though the doctors had managed to revive his pulse and heartbeat, his condition continued to be serious.

Bhupinder Singh, another cable operator, said the businesses of 23 local cable operators had been illegally usurped by Raju and his accomplices.

Raju could not be contacted for his comments on the issue despite repeated attempts. Investigating officer Nishan Singh said the matter was under investigation and they were yet to register any case in that regard.
