The Mohali police have booked a PCR constable and the truck driver/owner in the accident which took place last night, in which a migrant was killed after his Activa scooter rammed into a parked truck at Phase IX, Industrial Area, here.

The police have registered a case under Section 304 A of the IPC against the PCR constable and the truck owner/driver, who had left after parking the vehicle on the road. The case has been registered on a complaint of family members of the victim, Chintu Singh (31), a resident of Jagatpura village. Both of them are yet to be identified. However, the police have impounded the truck.

The incident had occurred at around 8 pm last night when Chintu Singh was allegedly thrashed by the PCR constable for running his soup business on a rehri in the area. After being thrashed, the victim had left the spot on his scooter, which rammed into the truck. He died on the spot after suffering a severe head injury.

Relatives of the victim and other migrants, who had assembled in large numbers at the spot after the accident, were demanding action against the policeman (who allegedly thrashed Chintu). They created a ruckus and attacked the PCR van, which had come to the accident spot.

“Had the police not beaten up Chintu, he would have been alive,” said Opinder Singh, brother-in-law of the victim. Other agitated relatives, including Munna, nephew of Chintu, and Anil, his cousin, also demanded strict action against the policeman.

In their complaint, Opinder Singh and other relatives alleged that the constable, who had come to the area on a PCR motorcycle, thrashed Chintu for no reason. After being thrashed, Chintu left the place on his scooter, following which the accident took place, they alleged.

Last night, relatives and other migrants, who had assembled at the accident spot, damaged a PCR vehicle. They did not allow the police to lift the body from the spot. The police had a tough time pacifying them.  Today, the deceased’s postmortem was conducted following which the body was handed over to his family members. A posse of police was present at the time of Chintu’s cremation to avoid any untoward incident.
